Monkey D. Luffy is a carefree young pirate with big dreams and a body made of rubber. He may begin his journey to fame inexplicably stuffed inside a floating barrel, but one day he plans to become the Pirate King. No self-respecting pirate king would be caught dead without a crew—or more accurately, would be killed if he didn't have one—so Luffy is on the lookout for skilled partners who will share his dream.

Shonen Jump series often take a while to hit full stride, and are thus justifiably famous for the frequency with which their fans use the lame phrase “it gets better later” to describe them. There is a school of thought, subscribers to which include myself, that holds that anything that can't manage to hook you within five hours (the length of this set) isn't worth wasting time on. To those not immediately susceptible to One Piece's often disconcertingly seamless mix of goofy weirdness, shameless sentimentality and pure bone-cracking cool, this immensely fun but occasionally clumsy set of introductory stories may well seem to fall directly into that category. To them I can only say with purest angelic honesty: it gets better later.

As for those who are susceptible to that mixture, or even just think that they might be: get ready for a boatload of fun. Without doubt the series is still in its introductory phase, going through the usual Shonen Jump steps of establishing its hero's dream and expounding upon the importance of friendship. You can actually see the series finding its path as the story arcs grow progressively longer and more involved. The first two villains do little more than provide a chance to introduce Luffy and Zoro. The Buggy fight sets the series' precedent for battles that are simultaneously tense and hilarious, but inexplicably relies on a dog for its emotional core. It's the Captain Kuro arc that finally sees One Piece commanding all of the qualities that make it such addictive viewing: brutal fights with high, carefully constructed stakes, a villain that is both unspeakably cool and utterly vile, an inventive sense of humor, and an ability to ground itself in intense emotion. Plus, in true shounen style, it ends the set with a killer cliffhanger.

However, even at this early stage the series' execution is more positive than negative. Eichiro Oda's peculiar artistic aesthetic—lanky, cartoony character designs, cluttered settings, bizarre clothing, and lots of distorted angles and ominously shadowed faces—allows the series to pull off the seemingly impossible feat of being totally silly and deadly serious at the same time, setting up hilarious sight gags (Buggy's ignominious defeat) and vicious brutality (Kuro's attack on Kaya's butler) with equal aplomb. Director Kônosuke Uda soon learns to turn the flat look of the series to his advantage, using lightning pans, overlapping panes of animation, and jumpy editing to give the fights a unique energy. And composer Kouhei Tanaka backs it all up with unexpectedly catchy symphonic and modern themes that, in Uda's hands, are pure piratic bliss. In the meantime awkward flashbacks and the occasional embarrassing dramatic flourish in the music attest—along with the honing of the narrative formula—to the series' fledgling status.

The big mouths, pointy teeth, and inhuman supporting characters will of course be off-putting to some, but the audience most interested in this release couldn't care less about the series' artistic merits or its growing pains. They already know exactly what colorful, incongruously cool, and often surprisingly emotional fun the series can be, because they're already fans. The most pressing question for these fans isn't how good the series is, but how well Funimation treats it. Well, allay your fears. Though basically a bare-bones release, the thinpak box, with thirteen episodes across two discs, is reasonably good-looking (no gaudy yellow), the episodes are genuinely uncut, and clean opening and closings are provided. For those for whom reaching for the remote each episode is a chore, here's even a marathon feature that plays the entire disc without the opening or closing sequences.

And then there's the English version. Funimation isn't exactly pulling out the stops, but they approach the project with all the professionalism and respect that one expects from an American licensor. Actors are generally well-matched to their roles, their performances often close enough to the originals to be a tad eerie. Of the main cast Christopher R. Sabat, in his usual gruff-but-kind groove, is a standout as Zoro, while Colleen Clinkenbeard's Luffy grows steadily on you. The supporting cast is excellent, especially when playing around a bit—Kenny Green is a pure gas as moon-walking pirate hypnotist Jango—and in the case of Carrie Savage's Kaya, can even carry some of the heavier scenes with surprising ease. The English-dubbed opening and ending songs will be an acquired taste (skillful songwriting notwithstanding), and when things get emotional in the Captain Kuro episodes the actors stumble somewhat over the clunky dialogue born of Funimation's uncharacteristic fidelity, but even at it's worst this version is far superior to 4Kids Entertainment's version. Of course it doesn't tell you much to say that it's better than 4Kids' hack job (that's like saying you're a better person than Hitler: it leaves an awful lot of leeway) but if watching 4Kids' version was like watching a Satanic cult eating an infant, then Funimation's version is like watching a perfectly normal family raise the same infant. Sure they have their problems, but at least no one gets devoured.

For those interested—and smart or persistent enough to finally track it down in the "Episodes" menu—Funimation also provides an audio commentary track featuring ADR director Mike McFarland, Clinkenbeard and Sabat discussing the insane dubbing hurdles that a sprawling shounen epic presents, especially one in which episode 144 is dubbed long before the crew even touches episode 1 (a split-schedule that was necessitated by Funimation's decision to continue the television broadcast where 4Kids left off).

Naturally he goes about it in the most haphazard way possible, his unpredictable behavior made all the more so by his inability to let any injustice stand unpunished. And injustice is everywhere. There are fat lady pirates and iron-jawed Marines who terrorize their underlings. There's Buggy, a ill-tempered pirate clown with a big cannon and terrifying powers who makes the mistake of letting an underling beat up a dog. And there's Captain Kuro, an evil, scheming ex-pirate with a plan to go legitimate that involves the cruel manipulation of an entire town's emotions. With so many evildoers to straighten out, it's a lucky thing that his insane persistence, fierce loyalty, and good nature are able to win normally level-headed folks like frighteningly skilled swordsman Zoro , female thief Nami and useless “marksman” Usopp to his side. Maybe he'll have his crew after all.

One Piece author Eichiro Oda stated that Luffy's personality and traits are heavilly influenced by Dragonball main character Son Goku, furthermore, Luffy's Gear Second which he used in his fight against Rucci was a complete duplicate of Goku's Kaioken, in both cases the skin turns reddish pink and emits vapor from the body, afterwards the strength and most notably the speed increases multiple times, and in both cases it's stated that the techniques cause tremendous stress on the body and could even shorten the user's life. This serves as something of an indicator as to how much Dragonball/Z continues to influence long running Shounen series to this day.

The character that asks Sanji if he will participate in the cooking competition after he is challenged also appears when the Strawhat Pirates leave Warship Island (he is a small man holding a box? and chewing on a toothpick?)

There is a subtle reference to Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann in episode 411. Just as Elder Nyon is falling from Boa Hancock's tower, one of the Kuja somewhat resembles Yoko, from the hairstyle, to the design of her bra, both look largely similar.

Gantz

Review:

Gantz

At first glance, Gantz seems like it's made out of two pieces. The first piece is a discordant dissection of the human mind, examining the private thoughts and emotions that run through the heads of society. The second piece is an alien-hunting game, Men in Black style. Combine the two and you get a series that leaves you in awe the entire time. Each individual scene seems disjointed and bizarre, but like the pieces of a jigsaw scattered across the floor, everything eventually comes together in an all too fascinating show.

Right from the start, viewers know that they're in line for a whole new ride. Kei is introduced as a disdainful high schooler who has a bad habit of getting an erection every time his mind wanders onto girls. As we follow him into the subway station, we see for the first time the aspect of this show that will snare viewers from the beginning. Instead of being told in the third person like most stories, Gantz is told from an omnipresent point of view. The thoughts in the heads of everyone on the screen are voiced so the focus of the story is split between that of the main character, and society as a whole. Already, this provides the perfect opportunity to take a snapshot of society and show how the creator views humanity. Humans are portrayed as selfish and judgmental pricks, living only for sensationalism and cheap thrills. This sets the stage for the events to come.

When a drunkard falls onto the subway tracks, no one is willing to help him except a high schooler name Katou. With the help of Kei, who was a childhood friend, they save the old man but get crushed by the train in the process. Mysteriously, they find themselves still alive, but transported to a room in Tokyo along with a few other people who also recently died. Just when things start settling down, the audience's attention is drawn to a large black ball in the middle of the room. Words appear on it, telling the room's occupants that “a new morning has come.” From then on out, a tale of conspiracies and extraterrestrial criminals unfolds, adding action to the already eclectic mix.

What really sets Gantz apart from other alien slaughter fests is the way that it's presented. The atmosphere is aided by a pumping soundtrack, ranging from a catchy hip hop intro to creepy background music. It's just as variegated and disjointed as the show, which really brings out the flavor of the story. Switching lightly between generic “Action! And Adventure!” guitar riffs and eerie chanting, followed up with traces of trance, the music is absolutely fascinating.

Add into the fact that the animation is powerhoused by the renowned Gonzo studio, what results is a masterfully crafted series with a solid storyline, intriguing characters, and something that's as appealing to the senses as it is to the mind. After all, what better way to get fanboys to drool over a property than throw in the Gonzo name, wrapped up in a shiny package of pseudo-psychoanalysis? The characters are just as pleasing on the eyes, and all-around, it's just a show ready and waterproofed for fandom drool.

Insights into the human psyche, lightened up with the occasional naked girl... Gantz is one of the best shows to come out this past year. There's so much there to tease your mind that it'd almost be a waste to let this slide by. Be sure to check it out as soon as it becomes available.

The charm this series holds over its fans is clear and perhaps no time more evident then when the devil butler Sebastian flashes his confident smile and brushes back his short flowing black hair atop his faintly androgynous features. He's a character who instead of feeling flat from being near-perfect, is actually all the more entertaining and the core of the series. An acrobatic fighter of great skill and demonic strength, a master chef and housekeeper, a snappy dresser and on top of that shares a deep, master-servant relationship with the young and somber head of the household, Ceil Phantomhive. Yana Toboso's revels in teasing about the events that transpired between them years ago.

Inconveniences to the perfection of their mansion have proven the most consistent threats to Sebastian from previous volumes, though to which he confronts with unnerving amounts of patience, but here in volume three the continuation of his fight with Grell offers up a considerably more exciting use of his abilities. Of course there's also a bit of sadistic fun in simply seeing someone so intentionally flawless take some damage and breaking a sweat.

Grell is entirely different beast altogether and it's clear why he's able to prove such a strong opponent for Sebastian. His otherwise pretty-boy design is creepily marred by a mouth of jagged teeth and his personality proves just as off-kilter. Sadistically relishing the fight with Sebastian and every drop of blood spilled, he jests and jeers with his opponent the entire time with an array of suggestive commentary that leaves even the reserved Sebastian with the heeby-geebies. He attacks relentlessly amidst cackles with his unorthodox weapon and whether it's by being creepy or just outright hilarious in both his achievements or failures, he's definitely a memorable character.

Much the same can be said for the book as a whole - how often do you get the chance to read a story about a dashing butler fighting a chainsaw-wielding psychopath with a passion for pregnancy? Well if it's drawn half as well as Black Butler, then you may find yourself hoping for it more often. Yana Toboso's art is gorgeous. If lithe pretty-boys with Gothic flair rendered in crisp detail tickles your fancy even a little, then prepare to melt. Whether you're watching these characters back flip off walls, stare venomously at their adversaries or just striking a pretty pose in their classy clothing, there's no shortage of eye-candy here. It's easily arguable that the visuals are the strongest element the series has. It's hard to imagine each scene holding even a fraction of its poignancy or interest-grab if the art wasn't one attractive illustration after another.

The storytelling itself is reminiscent of shoujo-horror creator Kaori Yuki. Victorian-era theatrics with blood-soaked alleyways, serial murderers, tormented pretty-boys and family lives that are anything but functional. Once Sebastian and Grell's fight is essentially completed, things detour to Ceil's Aunt An and her bleak back story. It proves considerably more engaging than one may assume it'd be going in, beginning in her years as an awkward teenager and eventually leading to her being molded by circumstance and psychosis into a medically licensed prostitute-killer. Her story is actually effectively heartbreaking to a point and surprisingly believable in its time-spanning evolution, save for perhaps the single-panel time skip of her medical degree acquisition.

Alas the affection for a cast of colorful characters is sullied by the return of the terrible trio – the gardener, cook and maid – who inhabit Ceil Phantomhive's home. Continuing on with all they've done in the past, they successfully appear just long enough to lay waste to Sebastian's hard work. Ruining the garden, blowing up the conservatory and destroying the living room - these characters seem poised to act as nothing but contrasts to Sebastian's unequal skills. Why? Presumably to ensure there's some life in the mansion aside from Ceil and his butler, though the resulting enthusiasm they exude leaves more a desire to see the devilishly well-dressed servant strangle it from them instead. Subjectively speaking of course.

Black Butler
manga Vol. 3

A bonus chapter in the book, which happens to sport the three, is an otherwise entertaining affair however. A visit from Ceil's uptight and outspoken Aunt Francis, the Marchioness of Midford, sends the estate into a tizzy as Ceil and Sebastian set to the task of pleasing her. Unfortunate yet hilarious hair-dos and a close-call encounter after a hunting duel mark a chapter that reaches a good balance of humor and character exploration.

Vampire Knight
DVD 1
Synopsis:

Vampire Knight DVD 1

Cross Academy is a little odd as schools go. It has one campus and two dorms, all of which are separated by moats and causeways. The occupants of the dorms are divided into the Night and Day classes, which means exactly what it sounds like: one class studies at night and the other during the day. And never the twain shall meet. Yuki Cross and Zero Kiryu are the Academy's Disciplinary Committee, charged with ensuring that the twain don't meet. Both are adoptive children of the Academy's eccentric founder Kaien Cross and are privy to the Academy's big secret: the Night Class is comprised entirely of vampires. Their days are spent driving the mobs of squealing Day Class girls away from the Night Class's parade of luscious undead man-flesh, the better to avoid blood-sucking mishaps. Both have their own hang-ups about the job—Yuki has a serious crush on Night Class leader Kaname Kuran and Zero, whose family was eaten by vampires, hates the creatures—but that's the least of their problems. Because Zero has a secret that will completely upend their lives, and perhaps even threaten the Academy's carefully maintained order.

Review:

Vampire Knight is at heart a classic, if twisted, love triangle. At the top you have perky amnesiac Yuki, on the right you have flawless pretty-boy vampire Kaname and on the left is tortured bad-boy Zero. As awful as that sounds—and you have to admit, it sounds pretty awful—the triangle works, and works well for a very basic but important reason: It's all kinds of perverse. Kaname is aloof, Yuki is codependent, Zero is violently antisocial, and between them they cover undead attraction (yay necrophilia), pseudo incest, and murderous hatred. Romance in Vampire Knight is anything but sunny and wholesome; it's all subtle poison and broken taboos. Even minus the bloodsucking and adoptive family ties, nothing about Yuki, Kaname and Zero's affections is healthy. Yuki's feelings for Zero are mired in pity and the weight of sisterly duty, and her affection for Kaname has a worshipful tinge that borders on subservience. Zero's desire for Yuki, in the meantime, is caught up in a masochistic cycle of self-loathing and denial, while Kaname's affection has already acquired a discomfiting obsessive edge. The Walton's this ain't.

Not everything relates directly to the series' love triangle, of course. Yuki's amnesia is one obvious sidebar, though it has yet to be explored, as is the vampire politicking hinted at by references to Purebloods and the Hunter Society, again unexplored. And there's also Zero's secret, which does get explored. (In case you haven't guessed, he's a classic self-hating "made" vampire). The best of it, though, all comes back to that domineering love triangle. The tortured-vampire boilerplate of Zero's incipient vampirism, for instance, is only interesting insofar as it affects his relationship with Yuki. Which it does by introducing an element of emotional sadomasochism to the already twisted dynamics of their three-way romantic tangle, as well as a rivalry for her delicious blood. Yum. In the end it isn't Zero's descent into undead-hood—or the vampire politics, or Yuki's amnesia—that makes volume two seem a damnably distant prospect; it's the anticipation of warped romantic developments to come.

When parsing why Vampire Knight enchants instead of making your eyes roll back into your head until the optic nerves snap—which it really should—the role of Kiyoko Sayama can't be ignored. One of a very few female anime directors, she's a shojo specialist of surprising patience and subtlety, and a master of the emotional zinger. She manages with deceptive ease the tricky feat of making the three protagonists' affections simultaneously obvious and tantalizingly elusive, and handles Yuki's discovery of Zero's ailment—the volume's solitary emotional peak—with restraint and intelligence that hide a potent melodramatic sting.

Where she really surprises, though, is in her visuals. Unlike most of her previous output, Vampire Knight isn't just sensitively directed, it's also beautiful. Sayama wraps her cast and their troubles in a rich gothic atmosphere, her camera trawling arched hallways and drifting across aged stone as elaborately uniformed teens play out their private dramas to the ravishingly dark music of Takefumi Haketa. From the overwrought symbolism of the opening credits to the crawling dollies, creepy marionette motifs and ironic tag line ("I'll also show you a sweet dream next night," in blood red letters) of the end credits, each episode is the performance of an artist in full control of her craft and relishing every tasty moment of it.

It's just a shame that all of that skill and enthusiasm aren't spent on something a bit worthier. Make no mistake, the series is a dark and delicious confection; but it's still just a confection. The skill of its handling and the gothic danger of its emotional perversity don't change the fact that Matsuri Hino's original manga was and is a preposterous teen melodrama. No amount of striking coloration or textured characterization erases the Night Class's role as a bishonen meat market. A facility for breaking them up with thoughtfully placed bits of goofy humor doesn't make the portentous inner monologues go away. Even if you love the show, chances are it'll still embarrass the heck out of you.

It isn't until you hear Viz's self-conscious English adaptation that it becomes clear exactly how important the passionate commitment of the Japanese cast is in selling the series' stilted dialogue and gothic excesses. The English cast is too professional to actually sound embarrassed when speaking, but they're obviously aware of how silly it all looks and sounds from the outside and it affects their performances. And even in the mouths of perfectly skilled performers like Mela Lee and Vic Mignogna, Vampire Knight's flowery language simply won't work without nearly perfect commitment. Without it, it's just tripe. A less than graceful translation shares some part of the blame, but it's that need for veracity that ultimately hangs the dub.

Not everything about these four episodes runs silk-smooth. Kaname doesn't come across favorably and several plot threads are introduced without so much as a cursory attempt to progress them (hello amnesia subplot, goodbye amnesia subplot). But the series' perverse sentimentality and immersive addictiveness are no less evident for the bumps along the way, making this, if not a perfect, a perfectly good introduction to one of anime's great guilty pleasures.
