Synopsis
The story centers around Tsukimi Kurashita, a huge fan of jellyfish (kurage, a wordplay on the "kura/mi" and "tsuki/ge" in her name) and a girl who moves to Tokyo to become an illustrator. She moves into "Amamizukan," an apartment complex that is full of fujoshi (diehard female otaku) with a no-men-allowed rule. However, one day, Tsukimi invites a stylishly fashionable woman to stay at her room at Amamizukan — only to discover that the guest is not who "she" seems to be.

Otome Yōkai Zakuro

Rating: 4

Review: Humor, romance, action. A novel setting and a dash of Japanese mythology. And comely characters, beautiful art and sleek animation to cover for the holes in its imagination. This is how anime should be. It's the Meiji Era in Japan. Japanese culture is just opening up to Western influences. Not everyone is pleased with the change; specifically the spirits (don't call them demons, that is way un-PC) who have traditionally dwelt in the nation. In an attempt to improve spirit/human relations the Japanese government and spirit elders decide to establish a Ministry of Spirit Affairs. It will be run by a select group of soldiers in tandem with ambassadors from the spirit world. Blunt man's man Riken Yoshinokazura, impulsive wunderkind Ganryu Hanakiri, and spirit-phobic ladies’ man Kei Agemaki are chosen to represent mankind, while the spirits carefully select four half-spirit girls—the most humanlike of the spirits—to represent them: spirited Zakuro, shy Susukihotaru, and mischievous twins Hozuki and Bonbori.

Naturally the girls and guys are immediately paired off—Zakuro with Kei, Susukihotaru with Riken, and the twins with Ganryu—and naturally romantic complications ensue. Even more naturally, something is causing normally tame demons to rampage, requiring the girls to do some exorcising. It is a very familiar arrangement—part shojo drama and part magical girl romp with a little demon action thrown in—and so charmingly executed that it hardly matters. Director Chiaki Kon (When They Cry) handles the adorable relationships with a light touch, navigating the series' pastel moods with surprising ease, while Mari Okada's script flirts openly with the premise's social subtext. The episode's climax, during which Kei's gory expectations of Zakuro's fighting prowess meet the lyrical reality of her spirit powers, mixes evolving relationships, shifting racial perceptions, and gorgeous visuals to stunning effect. A few clichés can't compete with that.

Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt

Rating: 2 (of 5)

Director Imaishi should have taken more than visual cues from famous Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network flagships and learned a little comedy writing from them too. Even the most unbearable shows created by Steve Ressel and others are more creative and well-written than this. (I mention Ressel particularly because Invader Zim is the most blatantly parodied show present in P&S.) Every joke in Powerpuff Girls All Grown Up here is poorly timed, base, and dare I say it: angry! It's not a fun raunchy romp, there's an air of desperation, like the show is spiting us for trying to laugh at it and it wants to be too edgy to handle just by virtue of repeating a lot of foul words.

The screenshots elicit more smiles than the show itself. I can't identify it, but there's a poisonous air hanging around this mess that just makes it unpleasant to sit through even if all the gags weren't all just seeing how many times the girls can talk about shit and jizz with no punchline.

In keeping with Toriyama's storybook intent, Cowa!'s panels are rectangles arranged in simple, intuitive patterns, a layout that, when added to the art, can make the book a visual bore. Toriyama uses the simple panel arrangements for humorous repetition and time-spanning montages, but the book doesn't escape the visual doldrums until he loosens up and falls back on manga's traditional cinematic qualities, throwing together straightforward but memorable action sequences.

Initially Makoleen seems a strange choice for lead character. A confessed killer and unapologetic loner, he's fat, mean, and ill-tempered. It becomes obvious early on that he makes an incongruously cool action hero—he's got serious moves for a fat guy—but it's his slow transformation from quick-tempered mercenary to canny, concerned partner that becomes the sympathetic core of his character. It's a simple progression, fuelled by convenient, repetitive plot complications, and the moral message implicit in Paifu's shifting regard for Makoleen is well-worn (it is aimed at kids after all), but Toriyama has the good sense to refrain from vocalizing his morals and to retain Makoleen's surly, iconoclastic edge, even as he waxes nice.

While Viz's decision to publish a children's story in its original unflipped tankoubon format is questionable, it does make for a fine introduction for youngsters to the world of manga. Viz kept the first chapter in color, a decision that would have been better had they also kept the second chapter in color—the decolorization makes it murky and hard to follow—but is nevertheless welcome. All of the sound effects are replaced and the extras are nil, as is Viz's wont.

Toriyama's art is simple to a fault. The monster children, though cute, are bare-bones caricatures. His settings have little of Dr. Slump or Dragon Ball's insane inventiveness. He favors simple line drawings over complex textures and intensive detail. Makoleen is probably the pinnacle of the book's artistic achievement, his design as simple as any in the book—all slouching posture and round, chubby lines—and yet still capable of communicating emotions ranging from bitter disappointment to desperately disguised joy with nothing more than pair of bruised, shifty eyes and a slit of a mouth.

Toriyama's offbeat humor, even dampened by the restrictions of children's stories (no running poop jokes or recurrent panty humor here), is a natural draw. The monsters' reversals of normal human behavior—in particular a scary game of “angel tag”—are always good for a chuckle, and chapters are as likely to end on a silly gag as they are on a cliffhanger. And for a while, that's the only draw the book has. The plot is simplicity itself—a straightforward road trip—and at times approaches haphazardness in its habit of tossing random obstacles into its protagonists' path. But then the bond between Makoleen and his monstrous little charges begins to develop and a curious thing happens: the story grows a heart.

I had a literature professor who once said that authorial intent is as useful in understanding literature as reading pig entrails is in understanding the future. As a totally shallow demonstration of why this is a truism, take Cowa!: Akira Toriyama writes that he wanted to make a straightforward storybook starring a “totally unlovable grumpy guy.” And yet his action instincts continually get the better of him—staging some decidedly un-storybook fights—and Makoleen is one of the most likeable grumpy guys ever. Not that either is a problem. Quite the contrary. Makoleen's character elevates what might have been a simple children's adventure to a gentle fable about acceptance and understanding, and since when was whaling on punks anything but an advantage?

Life is good, if surprisingly ordinary, for vampire/were-koala half-breed Paifu. His nights (monsters don't like daylight) are filled with mischief-making, errands, grade-school rivalries, and plenty of plain goofing off. Of course, all children have their fears—even the monsters. Fear of angels, heaven, and their parents. But far and away the most frightening thing in Batwing Ridge is Mako “The Volcano” Maruyama (AKA Makoleen), the massive human outcast who haunts the outskirts of their town. When a Monster Flu epidemic incapacitates the adult monster population, Paifu and his friends—Jose the ghost and Arpon the monster-ish, possibly aquatic thing—are commissioned to purchase the vaccine from a far-away witch. In dire need of assistance, they turn for help to the biggest, scariest thing in the village: Makoleen. One phony ten-thousand-dollar reward later and their journey begins, through rednecks, car wrecks, gangsters and ghouls.

Neon Genesis Evangelion
DVD Vol. 1
Neon Genesis Evangelion is a story of a frail looking 15-year-old boy and his unusual day-job: piloting a huge robot to save mankind against angelic invaders. It occurs on a drastically different earth, flooded by the melting of Antarctica. The year is 2015 and the place is Tokyo- 3, Japan. Bizarre-looking organisms, called angels have begun appearing and attacking mankind, and it seems that frail, 15 year-old Shinji Ikari and the biomechanical robot known as Evangelion, are mankind's only hopes. Under the auspices of NERV, a top secret UN organization, Shinji, and another pilot, Rei Ayanami, pilot their Evas in hand to hand combat with the angels. That's what the story is on the surface at least, but it quickly evolves into a psychological and philosophical melting pot with deeper meaning and symbolism, rife with religious images, metaphors, and techno-jargon.

DVD - Collection
Fear not, though; Aria approaches its forward-gazing narrative with the same quiet grace and eye for cinematic poetry that it brought to its uplifting mission in previous seasons. From the Arietta OVA that begins this set the series features a renewed focus on professional maturation that is pure Junichi Sato: so quiet, natural and seamlessly integrated into the series' visual and narrative rhythm that when it precipitates the first of a series of major life changes it's some time before you realize that he had been building to them all along. The feelings the series leaves you with are similarly constructed: gentle emotions built of little things—comments and tiny psychological revelations—whose full import only becomes clear when they swell together at the series' poignant conclusion.

Right Stuf's presentation of the series is every bit a match for its content. Their thinpak box is solidly built and thoroughly bedecked with the series' delectable art. The accompanying booklet is colorful, dense with interviews and cast retrospectives, and just generally a joy to read and look at (even if it has some embarrassing misprints). The decision to place the single Arietta OVA on its own disc seems wasteful until it becomes clear just how packed the other discs are. Every one of the three Origination discs features four to five episodes (episodes 1-13, plus bonus episode 5.5) along with two or three picture dramas—barely animated video mangas with enough bad dialogue to hint at how disastrous the series could have been were it not so carefully written and executed. And to round out the set, there's an entire extra disc of cast and crew interviews, including "SatoJun's 'Venice I'm Sorry!' Returns", a sequel of sorts to Aria the Natural's thoroughly charming travelogue featuring the thoroughly charming Junichi Sato.

There's no dub, but really, who expected one?

With background on Alicia and Akira's formative years and a focus on growing up that sees the central trio of Akari, Aika and Alice roughing out their future paths, this is a far more traditionally substantial season than the franchise's previous two. Occasionally rushed and less sparklingly magical than previously, the series doesn't suffer the change without consequence, but it remains a graceful and gorgeous experience. And if its new maturity inspires a certain sadness, well that's exactly as it should be. In the words of Akari: wonderful.

The commencement of forward motion comes at a cost, however. This is by far the least magical of Aria's installments, and not just because Cait Sith has gone MIA. The Origination lacks The Animation's freshness as well as The Natural's sprawl, the space in which to steep us in the laid-back atmosphere of Neo-Venezia. Its future focus foreshortens Akari's wide-eyed explorations of the here and now, and its final episodes, and the changes they effect, are more bittersweet coming of age drama than celebrations of everyday wonder. The conflicting emotions this season ultimately evokes are, as ever, subtle and sneaky in their power, but they also leave an entirely different impression than seasons past. Aria's customary warm glow is still there, but it's an older, wiser and sadder warmth.

Aria the Animation was our introduction to Akari and Neo-Venezia. Aria the Natural was the quintessence of their gentle magic. Aria the Origination is their final bow, fourteen episodes of elegiac beauty that soothe even as they mourn the franchise's passing.

If forward motion is the yardstick by which you measure quality, then The Origination is the best of all Aria incarnations. In its final season the series trims away the overt magical trappings of The Natural, narrows its focus back down to its central trio of apprentice undines, and moves their lives forward with almost shocking suddenness. After reveling in its sense of place and celebrating at length the languorous magic of everyday life, the series finally shifts its gaze to its characters' futures. If ever you were curious about the fate of Akari, Alice, Aika or any of the other "A"s who populate the series, The Origination's final episodes will leave you quite sated.

Muhyo & Roji's Bureau of Supernatural Investigation
Manga 6
So it looks like Muhyo and Roji has, for at least one more volume, dodged the bullet of being deemed "too mediocre to bother with." This installment manages to keep one's interest with a sudden turn of events halfway through, and it looks like there may be a whole new world of adventure in store for Roji. A couple of flashback chapters also help to add to the depth of the overall series, showing that the characters are worth caring about and that there's more to them than vanquishing troublesome ghosts every several chapters. The gruesome creature designs add some visual flair, although from most of the other pages it's clear that this will never win any awards for outstanding art. But then again, that's pretty much how Muhyo and Roji work: remaining barely above adequate most of the time, but occasionally throwing in something interesting enough to keep people from dropping the series. Best of luck to Roji on his exams.

Muhyo & Roji's Bureau of Supernatural Investigation
Manga 6
Not surprisingly, most conversations in this volume consist of typical shounen adventure dialogue, where characters yell at each other in battle, declare complex strategies aloud, and—in Roji's case—announce one's intentions to get stronger. For anyone vaguely familiar with the genre, this makes for very easy reading, and the only tricky language to be found is in discussions of spiritual/magical theory. Fortunately, the author's own footnotes help to explain matters of Ecto-this and Magic Law that. Also, the series' focus on fantasy and the supernatural makes it fairly light on references to Japanese culture; this probably makes it less jarring to see all the sound effects converted into English. In fact, with its simple dialogue and culture-neutral subject matter (apart from the occasional reference to Hades), this translation makes itself highly accessible to newcomers.

Muhyo & Roji's Bureau of Supernatural Investigation
Manga 6
The artwork of Muhyo and Roji is another aspect that seems to constantly waver between just plain lousy and surprisingly decent: Yoshiyuki Nishi's style of character design will never be known for its stylishness, but the monsters that they fight are some of the most convincing in the business. And it's not just the bad guys, either: even the creatures that Muhyo and Goryo summon for heavy-duty exorcism, as well as the various methods of Magic Law punishment, show a strong flair for fanastical, supernatural designs. There are also continuing improvements in areas like backgrounds—the architecture and environments in Roji's flashback, as well the Magic Law academy in the present day, show a good level of detail—and the layouts are only confusing one or two times, as opposed to the early volumes where they could spend entire fights without ever once clearly showing what was going on. Some artistic rough spots remain (so, uh, when did Roji pick up that staff?) but the visuals are competent enough to enjoy the action.

Manga 6
Thank goodness, then, that an unexpected idea strikes at the halfway point—one that sends Muhyo and Roji on separate paths. It also paves the way for a flashback on how the two met, which interestingly enough reminds us that there never was an origin story in the first volume—it just kind of dropped in on one of their missions. As far as character development goes, this flashback also explains just why Muhyo has stuck by his bumbling assistant for so long. More character development awaits in the present day, where Roji finally resolves to do something about his life and takes on the Magic Law Exams. On one hand, this could be the start of yet another cliché—the dreaded Training Arc—but on the other, it does provide a nice break from the usual ghost-hunting adventures and even introduces a couple of colorful new characters.

Muhyo & Roji's Bureau of Supernatural Investigation
Manga 6
The first few chapters are definitely tired old formula, though, with the usual "let's throw magical attacks around until someone wins" business, only with the attacks being thrown at ghosts instead of each other. Even the story behind the haunting—a sorrowful mother-and-daughter tale—had already been revealed in the previous volume, leaving little else except for Muhyo and Goryo to duke it out and finish the job. The competition aspect does lend some tension to the fight, as the rivals end up racing against time and against each other, and occasional sidekick Nana also gets a chance to star in this adventure. But those minor bright spots can't erase the fact that this is basically Muhyo and friends doing what they do best when the author runs out of ideas.

After the deed is done, Muhyo has some harsh words for Roji, who finds himself thinking back on how they met and where his career is headed next. Roji decides that his next step is to take the Magic Law Exams and discover just what he's capable of, but when the examiner pulls Roji aside for some "re-testing," could it be that his skills don't meet the expected standard?

DVD 1: Alpha
In the end, MeltyLancer is a completely forgettable piece of animation. The DVD provides all the usual special features that come on an anime DVD: a textless opening and closing, a list of terms, some mechanical designs, and a special video segment. Bandai hasn't announced any plans to bring the video game to America, and after watching this series, I can't imagine it being worth playing. There's plenty of good science fiction anime available now; there's no reason to watch this.

Melty Lancer
DVD 1: Alpha
That isn't to say that MeltyLancer is completely devoid of quality. It's an OVA series, animated by Gonzo on a very high budget, and the result is visually impressive. Despite the generally dull look of the show, the animation itself is fluid and very well done. The CG work isn't bad either; consider this show is pushing four years of age, and CG work has only improved in those four years. The DVD transfer is undeniably crisp and presented beautifully. Despite the generic production design, there is a considerable amount of eye candy to be had here, and if you're a fan of Gonzo, you may want to give this title a rent just to see them at their best when backed by a colossal budget. The dub is serviceable, but as with many dubs, it's hard to tell the females apart when they're speaking off-screen. You can't blame the voice actresses for that, since almost every anime female in every series is around 17 to 25, and there are only so many voice styles to go around. The two younger females in the cast sound like the same obnoxiously high-pitched woman in her late 20's who's struggling to sound like a little girl is voicing them. It's nearly impossible to tell them apart.

There's even a magic-using girl whose costume seems to have been dug out of the dumpster after the production of Saber Marionette J; she shoots down enemies with rainbows from her magic wand. There's also a requisite catigrl, a character type that's apparently required by law in any Japanese video game that features anime-style characters. The villain, a showboating, bratty redhead, looks exactly like Tira from Bakuretsu Hunters. In short, there is nothing in this series that hasn't been done a hundred thousand times before in nearly every other science-fiction anime available on the market. Nearly all anime is derivative, but most other series inject at least a modicum of creativity and attempt to look like more than an amalgamation of other popular shows.

Melty Lancer

The plotline is pretty basic: a team of hyper-talented female cops, each with a different specialty, is called together to defeat a band of space pirates that's been stealing DNA from endangered species. Science fiction is a genre in anime that's been mutated a thousand times, and this series seems like the long-lost cousin of the unpopular and forgotten Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko. But it lacks the creativity and mild entertainment that even Yamamoto provided. It's difficult to describe just how generic this series is. The design of the mecha, the space ships, the cursory characters, the costume design--everything is utterly forgettable and looks like it was lifted out of several similar-looking anime titles.

As a general rule, anime series that are based on video games are disappointing. The various Street Fighter and Vampire Saviour anime series available have been met with disdain from fans of both the games and anime in general. Since MeltyLancer isn't based on a long-running, credible video game franchise, it comes across as being horrifyingly generic. The cast of characters, assembled seemingly at random, consists entirely of hyper-competent, intelligent girls and a few inept and/or evil men. The female cast, obviously the focus of the series, is entirely forgettable. There's practically no fanservice in the series, which is highly uncommon for a show that's based on a game and focuses entirely on a cast of cute girls. It's as if the screenwriter didn't know he had crafted six utterly uninteresting characters, and then wrote a screenplay that focused on the bland personalities of these characters instead of giving the intended audience what they probably wanted, which was cheesecake.

MeltyLancer was a big project for Bandai about three years ago. They released a video game and this OVA series, titled “MeltyLancer: The Animation.” Both incarnations enjoyed modest success in Japan, but never really caught on in America with fans. It's fairly easy to see why; MeltyLancer is routine, unimpressive, and in the end, downright lame.

Review:

It's great to finally see some attention given to the Arata now residing in the human world come this third volume of the series. It's a short stint yet still nice to see he wasn't completely forgotten, even if the brief attention feels more intended to scream 'I didn't forget about him!' than to actually progress anything. Then again, comparing some run-ins with bullies to a society-altering magical quest for salvation in another world doesn't exactly feel all that equal on the importance scale.

Arata himself takes everything refreshingly in stride, a fantasy-world ignorance that makes him a likeable character as he deals with Hinohara's life as he's dropped into it. No one, Hinohara's family in particular, takes his claims of not being Hinohara seriously, so they just leave him to try and continue on with life as if nothing's wrong. Arata is thusly sent to school to the welcoming jeers of his classmates who heard that he was found naked and wandering in the streets. The bully from Hinohara's past returns with a vengeance, now taking Arata's mere existence personally and vowing to ruin his life. This is left open to offer some more drama later, but for its part here, it's satisfying watching Arata defeat the bully in a physical fight without breaking a sweat.

Back in the fantasy world, Hinohara makes it back to land after escaping the prison island with his healer sidekick, Kotoha, and the two boys he met while he was there. A tearful farewell and super plot-convenient appearance of one of the boys' mothers brings the group down to three. The remaining trio soon find themselves in a village where everyone – readers included - learn more about the world's political break down including the introduction of another Sho - the same magical-wielding distinction as Hinohara - and his own little female tag-along, a spunky young girl with a crush on her married master.

Suffice to say that whenever main characters regroup in a happy little village that everything's due to hit the fan. Things do and lives are lost and Hinohara gains a somewhat-new perspective on his role here. Like any good hero he puffs out his chest, holds tight his weapon and vows to save the world while standing bright-eyed and hair-flowing atop a cliff side for good measure. The mysterious figure from earlier volumes, who clearly knows more than anyone else, arrives back on scene to give Hinohara the you-wield-a-legendary-weapon-and-will-change-the-world speech while Kotoha makes a refreshingly forward move at the story's end that should de-stale their relationship by a fair bit come volume four.

This series has already marked a fairly big change in Yuu Watase's repertoire of shoujo-work it teeters on the line between shoujo and shonen plot elements and appearance. The art style is one of the most noticeable changes, especially with the high contrast inking and busy panels. While the look of the art itself is really impressive, there's still some difficulty telling what's going when the fight scenes really get going. The emotional effects post and prior to the events are as clearly rendered as ever for the artist, but when speed lines start flying and swords start clashing it becomes difficult to tell what's flying where without a few rereads.

Unfortunately the same thing can also be said for some of the events leading up to the book's climatic at-end fight scene, when the originally-lead antagonist facing his own betrayals comes racing onto the scene. The story flips back and forth between the gruesome discoveries he makes and what's going on where Hinohara is. When the events collide, what's going on where becomes clear but that's when it blasts into the cluttered fight scenes. You can still tell what's going on in the grand scheme of things, yet it's frustrating having the flow of the story hampered by these coherency issues.

This third volume of Arata is a fairly solid continuation of the story but falls short on a lot of elements, making it the weakest of the series to date. It sports some messy execution and stereotypical character progression that feels a step back for Hinohara. Hopefully this is a mere bump in the road, a muddled mass of events to advance the plot that will only be a bump in the road of an otherwise entertaining series.

Best anime openings for Christmas insanity (part two)

After the Black Friday madness, it's time to continue with my list of the top 26 opening sequences for anime shows. Moving onward to number 20...

20. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, first season
This opening looks more like one of those 70s romance shows, like "That Girl" or "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." The characters dress up with considerable class. Even the juxtaposition of the drawings make them look like high-end individuals. It's still a classic for me.

No moe show has stirred as much controversy as the second season of Haruhi. This show isn't an ordinary experiment in shoujo anime anymore. It is guaranteed to test your toleration for anime boredom.

Yet, this is also why it's one of the more important shows of the decade. There's no other show that will amuse you and disgust you as much as Haruhi. If you're into camera tricks and classy cinematography, get season one for $35. Season two is also available at a more expensive $49.

19. Super Dimensional Fortress Macross
Not too many of the old mecha show openings lasted the test of time. However, almost every old anime fan remembers this grand opening for "Macross."

This is another one of those really corny intros where the singer has to sing the name of the show. The epic scale of the orchestra and the electric guitars makes the show much larger than life. The hero of the series, Rick Hunter, also looks incredibly cool as the star pilot of the series.

Most of the DVDs are still available on amazon.com. You have to make sure to buy only the grey copies with the words "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross," though. This was one of the shows that was first released with a terrible English dub and none of the original Japanese audio, so make sure you find the proper version.

18. Death Note, second opening
People don't usually hear about death metal bands in Japan, so this was an excellent intro that showed off the random, schizophrenic sound of Japanese metal. It also included some of the edgiest visuals for an anime opening.

It doesn't make much sense, but it truly captures the dangerous atmosphere of "Death Note."

In case anyone is wondering, Funimation recently released the Death Note episodes in two box sets. Each part is available for only $28.

17. Hidamari Sketch x365
I didn't even consider putting "Hidamari Sketch" into the list until I saw the second opening. The show easily trumps Haruhi and "Lucky Star" with a cheery, hyper intro that captures everything that makes it so special.

This intro included everything. The characters show off their name stamped on their faces and arms. We get to see all the characters, from the weird principal to the caterpillar mascot. Panels from the comic are even flashing by at high speeds.

Sure, this intro copies the flying character sequence from Azumanga Daioh. Twice. Yet, no one can argue about how the animators neatly synchronized all the letters, numbers and character motions to match the fast music.

Seasons one and two are available on amazon.com for $36 each.

16. Xam'd - "Shut Up and Explode"
Xam'd is one of those shows that you have to watch, just because it looks cool and surreal. This opening happens to have the hardest-hitting post-punk song I've ever heard in an anime.

There's plenty of things that just look great. The giant Xam'd monsters that are destroying buildings. The unique motions of the characters to the hip music. The person who probably lured people in the most is the girl who looks like a cross between Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa. Come on, you have to watch a show just because this girl's image was inspired by two of the best Hayao Miyazaki films of all time.

Xam'd is available in two box sets. The first box is available for $37.

In another week, we'll look at numbers 15-11 on the list.

DVD Review: Growing up with Friends, Food and Art

"Hidamari Sketch" is a warm, fuzzy slice-of-life that will get any fan interested in art and friendship.

Don't let the cute intro fool you--"Hidamari Sketch" is one of the best slice-of-life series with moe characters. Although the first season is only 14 episodes long, it sucks you into the everyday life of four of the kindest girls you'll ever want to live with for the rest of your life.

Unlike other moe shows, this series is more like a chronicle of an entire school year from January to December. It takes you right into a special art high school, where the four girls are learning how to perfect their craft. The girls, Yuno, Miyako, Hiro and Sae, have known each other for half a year.

Right from the start, this story strays dramatically from the typical formula of uber-cute moe. Rather than focus on the characters' adorable love for guitars or anime, the characters actually spend time talking together. They talk about a wide range of topics, such as the romance novel that Sae is usually writing.

Each character has unique traits that actually complements their friendships and their art skills. For instance, Miyako overeats and tends to joke around too often. Although she often goofs around by drawing anime-style characters, she has a knack for capturing her best friend's unusual facial expressions in a drawing.

You'll even notice how all the characters' art skills improve. Anime fans will love watching Yuno as she learns to harness her artistic talent to create beautiful, life-like drawings. They'll even enjoy all the subtle moments when Yuno sits in the bathtub, reflecting on everything happened during the day.

Yuno even learns to appreciate all her friends' humorous habits and customs. At one point, she has to borrow Miyako's "horror" alarm clock. The alarm is literally a goofy voice recording of a woman who is screaming at the top of her lungs.

Even though "Hidamari Sketch" isn't the most dramatic or most well-drawn, it has a simple visual touch that looks amazing on screen. Many of the anime textures include actual photographs. For instance, the escalator in a shopping area includes actual photographs which might have been manipulated through 3D animation magic.

Every backdrop is like a work of art. The stairs turn into abstract horizontal lines moving up or down the screen. The textures are sometimes shaded with dot patterns, rather than in different gradients. The anime even includes a photograph of the actual sculpture of Brutus, pasted into the high school classroom setting.

These are just a few of the many reasons why "Hidamari Sketch" is a huge hit in Japan. The show ran for two seasons and it is about to start its third. It's one of the only moe shows where the girls actually act like mature grown-ups. Although "K-On!" is receiving all the buzz this year for its exciting rock music, no one should ever overlook the wonderful "Hidamari Sketch."

The Abashiri Family
Synopsis

The Abashiri criminal family is about to reveal its greatest secret: the youngest "son" of the family is really the first female born to the family in centuries! (Why her brothers didn't notice this before is beyond me.) But between the senseless violence of their world and the whims of a few arch-criminals who would silence their opposition, does Abashiri Kikunosuke stand a chance of becoming the daughter her father wants her to be, or will she die trying?
Review

What happens when the yakuza go insane? You get the Abashiri family - a family of criminal goons that is simply beyond belief. How Kikunosuke (the lone female of the family) manages to keep a semblance of sanity in that background is beyond me. Amid very unsettling violence, she goes to school to attempt to be a normal girl (only God knows why), only to find out she's entered the school from Hell. (Literally.) Fight, kill, live. (Did Go Nagai have THAT bad of a childhood or something?)

The Abashiri Family is a truly absurd, yet somehow amusing piece of animation that is akin to Cutey Honey meets the yakuza meets Itchy and Scratchy. The superhuman powers of the family itself tend toward the hilarious side, with one of the sons, for example, almost literally a rubber man as far as flexibility (practiced in his pursuit of ladies' undergarments a la Happosai).

The body count in this show is staggering, bloody, and bared to the screen. The story includes double-crosses, traps, and all manner of devices designed to make an end of the Abashiri criminal empire, which inevitably fail due to their inhuman powers and capabilities of killing. For all it's worth, very few characters in this show are portrayed as being truly good. (Don't attach yourself too much to the one that is...hint, hint.) The Abashiri clan might be the protagonists, but they are just as loaded with faults as the villains in the cast, though by no means as mean-spirited or nefarious. They want to rule, not destroy, and that makes them far more "noble" than those who would kill and rape to keep control. So it seems, anyway.

I'd really recommend this only for those with the strongest constitutions. Lots o' bloody death a la Go Nagai, slightly dated animation and art, and really bizarre character designs make this one a truly strange trip indeed. Again, being hopped up on caffeine at six in the morning also helps with this one. Just don't bother making too much sense of it; there's just not a lot of sense to be found here.

Add one star if you're a Go Nagai fan. If you're not, feel free to ignore this videotape. A whole lot of people might even drop this a star and stick in the turkey bin, and I can't say that wouldn't be unfair. — Carlos Ross

Recommended Audience: Definitely not for children. This is one of the movies that rank up there with Fist of the North Star in bloodshed. Decapitation, bullet wounds ... you name it, they've got it, in all its crimson charm. Also a few rape and attempted rape scenes that are just as repellent as the violence.

Tokko
DVD 1 Review

Ranmaru Shindo, along with his feisty, devoted little sister Saya, survived a brutal murder spree that left 97 percent of their apartment-complex neighbors dead, including their own parents. Shindo is plagued with nightmares in which a sword-wielding topless woman dispatches his night-terror pursuers with extreme prejudice. Recently inducted into the investigation unit of the police department, he is determined to use his new position to track down his parents' killers. His resolve is only reinforced when he meets Sakura Rokujo, a member of the super-mysterious Division 2 of the investigation unit and the spitting image of his blood-spilling dream-babe, in the midst of a vicious firefight with what to all appearances is a gang of murderous super-fast zombies. Of course, not all is as it seems (is it ever?): Shindo and Rokujo have a deeper connection than he realizes, medieval alchemists and demons feature heavily in his new life, and he may have more in common with those zombie nasties than he'd ever want to admit.
